How to make a DVD photo slideshow using Microsoft Photo Story 3,
TMPGEnc, DVD-lab or Sonic MyDVD
1. Run Microsoft Photo Story
3
 | Import photos and music, select transitions. |
 | Select "Save your story for playback on your computer",
select "settings" and choose "PapaJohn DVD profile 720x480
(NTSC)" available from PapaJohn's
site.
If you don't have that profile, choose "Profile for computers
(800x600)".
Don't select "Profile for creating DVDs (640x480)" as
this profile results in blurry images (what's up with that, Microsoft?!) |
 | This will create a WMV file. |
2. Run TMPGEnc:
 | Load the WMV file from above. |
 | On the "Set output" window, select "DVD (NTSC)" |
 | Set the max video bit rate to 8000, avg to 7500 |
 | Set audio bit rate to match audio (128K, 192K, etc.) |
 | Set output stream type to ES (video + audio) |
 | Create output files (.m2v and .mp2), this may take quite a while depending
on the length of your video. |
3. To create the DVD menus, I use either Sonic MyDVD or DVD-lab. I prefer
MyDVD for it's ease of use.
Sonic MyDVD:
 | Select "Create project | DVD" |
 | Click "Add files" and select the .M2V video files created by
TMPGEnc.
Note: MyDVD can directly import WMV files from Photo Story 3, however MyDVD
crashed during the video transcoding process for my project so I used the
TMPGEnc converted files (.M2V) instead. |
 | Change the title and button text by clicking the title or just underneath
the buttons. |
 | Click "Edit Style" to choose a different menu style, background,
font, buttons, etc. I find the default font sizes to be too small. You can
add an audio to play during the menu but if the menu is animated the audio
will loop at the same rate as the menu. |
 | Click the "Play" button to preview your DVD (click the
"running man" icon first to preview animated menus) |
 | Select the desired DVD Quality. I chose "high quality". You may
need to reduce quality to fit more video on a disc. |
 | Click "Burn". You're done! Skip the remaining steps.
|

DVD-lab:
 | Import the .m2v and .mp2 files from TMPGEnc. |
 | Link your .m2v and .mp2 files to movies |
 | Create a menu |
 | Click "Project | Compile DVD" to create "VIDEO_TS"
and "AUDIO_TS" folders |
 | DVD-lab couldn't burn to my DVD drive (NEC 3500A), so I had to use the
burning software that came with my DVD drive (Nero): |
Run Nero Express:
 | Insert DVD-R disc |
 | Click "Add" |
 | Browse to the DVD-lab output folder, select "VIDEO_TS" and "AUDIO_TS" folders, click
"add" |
 | Click "next", set disc name, write speed, click
"burn". |
