On power up, the PC locks up after displaying "Verifying DMI pool data".

On power up, HIMEM gives the error message "HIMEM has detected unreliable memory at...".

The PC doesnít recognize the upper memory between 640K and 1MB, even though 1MB RAM is installed and Iíve configured HIMEM and EMM386 properly.

[added 4/22/04] The CMOS backup battery (part number 02K6502) is dead and needs to be replaced.
Download the IBM hardware maintenance manual at http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/LWIK-3SYPX2.html
See page 67 for instructions on how to change the backup battery. This manual also lists the CMOS error codes and descriptions.
Do a google search for "IBM 02K6502 battery" to find a place to purchase the battery.

A dial-up error 645 occurs when attempting to connect to the internet.
[added 12/15/03]This problem is related to not having "client for Microsoft networks" installed. Click "start | settings | control panel | network" and if "Client for Microsoft networks" is not listed, you'll need to add it by clicking "Add | Client | Add | Microsoft | Client for Microsoft networks | OK". You'll be prompted to enter your Windows 98 CD (I had to enter "d:\win98" as the path).
You'll be prompted to reboot. After rebooting, the dial-up connection should work.

[added 12/12/03]Press Fn+F8 in DOS to toggle full-screen mode.

I'm trying to edit a file but a "bad command or file name" occurs.
[added 5/30/00] The editor program may be missing or not PATHed correctly. Type "edit" and press Enter. If you still get a "bad command or file name", then the path is probably wrong. Type "dir edit.com /s" from the root directory to determine where the "edit" program is located (usually in C:\DOS on DOS PC's, C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND on Win9X PCs.
Type "windows\command edit \autoexec.bat". This should load the autoexec.bat file into the editor. Add the following to the end of the PATH line: ";c:\windows\command". Reboot the computer.

Printing doesn't work on an El Diablo system.
[added 3/22/00] Make sure the CMOS setup has the printer IRQ configured for IRQ 5, not IRQ 7, as this conflicts with the RS-485 card. Make sure the SETVER command in config.sys matches the PRINT.COM file (usually 6.22).

How do I find out what kind of modem I have?
Look up the Federal Communications Commission ID number written on the modem and search for it at www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/ead

On power up, the PC locks up after displaying "Verifying DMI pool data".
Run the CMOS setup program and select "Load setup defaults". Any previous custom CMOS setting may need to be entered at this point, such as disabling any onboard serial ports or changing the parallel portís IRQ.

On power up, HIMEM gives the error message "HIMEM has detected unreliable memory at...".
One or more of the PCís memory chips (SIMMs) may be defective. Make sure the memory chips are fully seated. Try re-arranging the memory chips in the PC. Swap the memory chips with new ones-make sure you get the correct kind (parity/EDO/speed/pin config, etc.).

The PC doesnít recognize the upper memory between 640K and 1MB, even though 1MB RAM is installed and Iíve configured HIMEM and EMM386 properly.
Add more memory (to at least 2MB). Some PCís donít recognize this memory space with only 1MB of RAM.
